Helping the eKhaya eKasi community in Khayelitsha, South Africa

As many of you know, I started a women's mobile photography project in Khayelitsha (Cape Town's largest township) in Nov. 2013. I have returned to South Africa every year, including as recently as Oct/Nov 2019. If you know me, you know how much I love South Africa and how connected I feel to it and the eKhaya eKasi community. CAPE TOWN PHOTO TOUR At eKhaya eKasi, mobile photography creates awareness, promotes products and events, tells stories and generates income. Since the beginning of The Heart of a Woman Project (THOAW), I've felt it was essential to connect the ladies I work with and the THOAW supporters as a means of encouragement, transparency, and in hopes that they could learn about each other. I thought the best way to do so was through social media, so I taught the ladies about Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and helped them set up their accounts. I also thought social media could be a way for them to create awareness, promote their products and events, and tell stories. It's hard to believe it's already October and it's been over a year since I last visited Cape Town and South Africa. This is the longest I've been away from South Africa, but I will be returning in November 2018. I was last in Cape Town in February 2017 for a project that I couldn't share at the time. In September of 2016, I was contacted about the possibility of the project with an organization visiting Cape Town from Europe.
